What struck me here was the design and level of detail of each character is amazing. Beautiful color palette , nice warm accents, makes it so easy on the eyes, I love it.
The composition though, I felt was very confusing. You have to take note of where your characters are looking, because that is most usually the next place your audience would look at. Especially when they are the center of attention of the piece.
The warrior-type and assassin-type character at the back got it going good. Their eyes as well their body bring the idea that they're going to engage with the other characters. That's very good, it keeps the attention on the characters. However, the problem lies on your more prominent characters, the archer and the mage.
The mage, at first glance, seems to be facing and looking upwards which led me almost off the image. The archer seems more ridiculous as she's looking towards the left at nothing and her arrow's pointing towards the right off of the camera at no one. It's as if she's completely unaware of the other characters. The most confusing part of all, for me, was the rock with ?ice/crystals? at the center. The archer's arrow directly leads my eye towards it, and its also dead center of the commotion. Moreover its highly detailed compared to the other background elements, even more with its popping blue color. It brings up the question "What's this rock for?" which the image yields no obvious answer to. The rock is just awkward and really out of place.
I think this compositional problem is critical especially when you say that this is a marketing illustration. I think you focused too much on the individual characters that you neglected them as a group that could interact with each other. Like, the archer in fact I found the most beautiful with her design and pose, but its like she's not paying attention to the fight that's happening. The archer and the mage are the prominent characters, and what they were looking at didn't make sense. That's what in my opinion, drags this piece down.
There is no doubt you have amazing skills shown by your beautiful art. Its just that portions of it was confusing.
Please make more neverwinter art. It's the best mmorpg out there in my opinion. (I say this because the simple controls that others don't have) It seems to be dieing out but hopefully they regain popularity when they release for consoles.
It's a nice painting definitely. But I'm not sure what the characters are trying to do. Are they rushing towards the enemy? If so, the enemy seems to be at four places at once. There's no coordination. It feels strange as a result.
It's a marketing illustration to be used for branding purposes (as a web page header and in numerous ads throughout the web) all the characters are placed and designed so that they could be easily replaced or moved, in this case client is usually very specific concerning what they want to see and where.. coz they have a better understanding of how the piece may change when used for particular web pages and in particular formats, it's almost never to be seen as a full composition like presented here.. so yup - can feel awkward
